The Seniors Outreach Caring Cars Volunteer Driver Program is a vital community service that helps seniors and other vulnerable residents access safe, reliable, and affordable transportation. Modeled on successful volunteer driver initiatives across Alberta, Caring Cars connects volunteer drivers with clients who need rides to essential appointments, services, and community events.
Transportation between communities has long been a recognized need in Kneehill County and surrounding areas, particularly with the loss of commercial bus services. Yet, operating a full transportation system can cost millions annually—well beyond the resources of most rural nonprofits. By building local volunteer capacity, the Caring Cars Program provides a not-for-profit rideshare service that is both cost-effective and community-driven.
Volunteer Drivers are reimbursed for mileage and experience the reward of making a direct difference in someone’s life. Riders benefit from peace of mind, knowing that their driver has been screened, trained, and is committed to providing safe, friendly, and trustworthy transportation. It’s truly a win-win for our community!

Volunteer programs like Caring Cars strengthen communities by fostering connections and resilience. Alberta’s growing senior population is increasingly at risk of social isolation and depression, especially when transportation barriers limit access to health care, community activities, and essential services. Transportation is a key factor in reducing isolation and supporting well-being.
The Caring Cars Program works to reduce social isolation and improve access to health care and community resources, resulting in stronger, healthier, and more connected communities.
This program helps build connection and resilience by:
Ensuring community members know what is happening in their area
Helping community members connect with one another
Creating a stronger sense of belonging
Encouraging residents to support and help each other
Building a culture of care and volunteerism
Research has shown that access to social resources activates resilience and supports better psychological adjustment, health, and well-being. By promoting stronger, connected, and engaged communities, Seniors Outreach’s Caring Cars Volunteer Driver Program helps residents stay healthier, feel more supported, and navigate challenges with confidence.
